Elizabeth Blackwell was natural on February 3, 1821 in Bristol, England. She was the third of nine children born to Hannah Lane and Samuel Blackwell. Samuel Blackwell was a sugar finer who was well cognise in England for his somewhat liberal attitude towards religion and social ideologies, advocating the abolition of slavery and church reform. Because Samuel Blackwell was a dissenter, the Blackwell children were denied public schooling. He was a very forward thinking man and believed women should cause the same education as men. Samuel hired private tutors, who went against usage and instructed the girls in the same subjects as the boys, to school his children in History, Mathematics, Latin, and Greek.
In 1832, when Elizabeth was 11years old Samuel decided to move his family to America. They settled in sweet York, New York. There he set up the coition Sugar Refinery. In 1836 the refinery was burned to the ground and the family relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio. equitable 3 weeks after moving to Ohio, Samuel Blackwell died, leaving behind a widow, nine children and a whole lot of debt. Pressed by financial need the Blackwell sisters Elizabeth, Anna, and Marion along with their mother started a school, The Cincinnati side of meat and French School for Young Ladies.
This school provided instruction to small ladies in most if not all subject and aerated for tuition, room and board. During this time Elizabeth was introduced and started attending the Unitarian church. A worldly-minded backlash from the community ensued and as a result the academy lost many pupils and was abandoned in 1842.
In 1844 Blackwell took a teaching job in Henderson, Kentucky. This is where Elizabeth got her first up next encounters with the realities of slavery. These racial attitudes offended Elizabeths strong abolitionist beliefs; she resigned at the end of the year and returned to Cincinnati.
