Latin the States has been under the colonial yoke for a long age .The Portuguese and Spaniards ruled Latin America. Colonizers consciously and systematically subdue the Indigenous cultures of these countries. Native Cultures were assimilated into the rulers cultures forcibly and they had lilliputian choice. Their cultural legacy that was passed on in the form of exuberant Oral Tradition was considerably lost. The language of the colonizer became the knife Franca of these countries. Latin American writers chose the language of their colonizer to voice their quetch against their oppressor.

Latin American Literature spans for many centuries. The early novels of Latin America were rather harsh and cruel. The next trend of novels that had a local feel and flavors were called as Novelas de la tiera Regionist novels. Allegory and myth were freely used. Avant-Garde tradition percolated to novels rather slowly than separate genres. It had to wait until the sway of Regionist novels waned. Avante Garde incepted the African and Indian traditions into the mainstream Latin American Literature.
The Indigenous tales of Mayan, Cuban and Ecuadorian tales were retold in Spanish and Portuguese.
